Part 1 Term Project for Social Media for Teaching and Learning

Lori Lalama                                                            Term Project: Part 1

Marketing Research Study: Chocolate Chip Cookies Taste Testing
In this assignment I am going to redesign and adapt one of my favorite projects to introduce Excel in my class. My students will do great things when it involves some type of food! I always ask if any students are allergic to chocolate and if so, they get oatmeal cookies. I will incorporate the BYOD, websites and apps to support the project in its entirety. Rewriting my plans and incorporating this great mobile technology will lesson my work for the next school year. (Since I have gone through Sheltered Instruction Observational Protocol for ELLs, I must incorporate a language objective into my lesson plans.)

Social Media Tool: Moodle

The social learning tool that my students can use is Moodle. The social networking sites are blocked, so Moodle is the only choice. This is set up on my Moodle site for my students to view and make sure they follow step-by-step. Since I am one of the first to train and to help write the guide to use it in Clifton, it is easy to show the students how to look for the information, answer in a forum and upload documents and projects to me. There are great tutorials on the Internet to download and follow as a teacher to help you understand the different sections of Moodle and how to use it correctly. The one by Click2Try is great! It is a PDF download. There is also Professor Moodle on YouTubeSince you cannot get into the Moodle, I will incorporate some screenshots as separate uploads.
The students are very adept at quickly figuring out the steps to reach the desired outcome. When I attended FETC, I showed my students how to correspond with me in a Forum because the chat feature was disabled. If they had questions or wanted to say hi, I would answer almost immediately or within a few minutes. I had the site open on my iPhone during the lectures, so I could answer and say hi too.

Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets
Unit Summary:
This project shows students the benefits of using graphs to communicate specific information, answer teacher guided questions as well as student developed questions, and students will classify their results, summarize their findings, convert their numbers into charts, and make predictions about the different brands of chocolate chip cookies. Students will incorporate the use of the following devices: school computer, their personal smartphone/tablet and digital camera.

New Jersey Core Content Standards for this Project
STANDARD 8.1: Computer and Information Literacy
All students will use computer applications to gather and organize information and to solve problems.
Descriptive Statement: Using computer applications and technology tools, students will conduct research, solve problems, improve learning, achieve goals, and produce products and presentations in conjunction with standards in all content areas, including career education, consumer family and life skills. They will also develop, locate, summarize, synthesize and evaluate their projects through the incorporation of mobile technology to become lifelong learners and leave an educational, student-centered positive digital footprint.

STANDARD 5.4 NATURE AND THE PROCESS OF TECHNOLOGY

All students will understand the interrelationships between science and technology and develop a conceptual understanding of the nature and process of technology.

Student Learning Goals
Lesson #1
Content Objectives: Students will be able to:
Select and use appropriate tools and technology to accomplish a variety of tasks and solve problems. (Computers/tablets/Smartphones/digital cameras)
Use content-specific software to support learning (Microsoft PowerPoint/Google Slides or specific apps to be checked by teacher/SlideRocket) Mobile Apps: SlideShark, CloudOn.
Design products using technology resources that demonstrates and communicates curriculum concepts.

Language Objectives: Students will be able to:
Orally give information about how to design a cover on PowerPoint/Slides/SlideRocket
Discuss the necessary functions needed to develop their cover.
Orally explain the step-by-step process to complete their cover.

Lesson #2
Content Objectives: Students will be able to:
Use content specific software to support learning (Microsoft Word/Google Docs/Notes App on Smartphone)
Select and use appropriate tools and technology resources to accomplish a variety of tasks to solve problems. (ShowDocument: Upload (from your computer, server, web or other source), share, discuss and annotate on a wide range of documents, including Microsoft® Word, PowerPoint®, Adobe® PDF, text, image and video clip files. Check this out this is a great app!)

Language Objectives: Students will be able to:
Listen to the presentation about the importance of marketing studies.
Ask for information about previous participation.
Discuss in groups.
Talk about different types of chocolate chip cookies and describe them.
Form generalizations about their predictions about taste testing the cookies. (If necessary, use oatmeal cookies)
Write down 20 words describing a chocolate chip cookie, then write short question using that word for your questionnaire.

Lesson #3
Content Objectives: Students will be able to:
Demonstrate a sound understanding of the basic functions of Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets/ispreadsheet Free, Free Spreadsheet, Easy Spreadsheet Lite (Mobile Apps)
Use Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets and if used other apps to create a spreadsheet.

Language Objectives: Students will be able to:

Listen to the spreadsheet presentation by the teacher.
Discuss the necessary functions and tools.
Elicit information about the spreadsheet and ask clarification questions for understanding.
Use different strategies to understand vocabulary, construct meaning and build content knowledge.

For Lesson #3: Quia’s Website for Excel Vocabulary Games:
Students will be able to play these two Excel game sites on Quia.

Lesson #4
Content Objectives: Students will be able to:
Gather data; design/create a spreadsheet to be used to make charts displaying the information
Produce an acceptable document that will be imported into a multimedia, multidisciplinary project.
Choice of tools to use:
*Digital Camera: They can take pictures/video taste testing their cookies, discussing the differences to incorporate the actual engagement into their project.
*Microsoft PowerPoint/Google Slide/SlideRocket (Students will take screenshots of their Excel/Sheets section and crop the information into PowerPoint/Slide/SlideRocket and make a presentation with their information.
*The students can share this on SlideRocket/SlideShark or use Animoto to create their multimedia presentation from their phone or as a web tool. VoiceThread is another app/tool but it is not free, but worth its weight in gold. Another one to check out is Magisto. This is online and an app for the Smartphone. The students can take their PowerPoint slides, add a recording and make a movie too through MovieMaker/GarageBand.

Language Objectives: Students will be able to:
Classify three types of chocolate chip cookies in worksheet A, B and C.
Identify steps in a process
Make comparisons.
Make an inference based on comparisons
Draw conclusions based on the results.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction
Special Education Student: The student’s work will be modified depending on their disability and what their Individual Education Plan states. They may use a dictionary app, thesaurus app, and a grammar app.

Non-Native English Speaker: The ELL students can follow along with the teacher when the initial presentation in given. Then the entire class can observe the teacher at the SmartBoard while explaining the step-by-step process. The students can use apps for translation like Google Translate, iTranslate or Translate Voice Free.

Gifted Student: Students can show a comparison between the results of their group. Which cookie tastes better and explain why. Also, were you surprised at the initial results? Explain the problem with not taste testing the items previously and how can you change that at home.

Student Assessment
The students will review the rubric before the start of the project so they will know what the teacher will be grading. Students will be assessed through the use of a teacher prepared rubric based on their completed project that incorporates all four lessons into a final multimedia, multidisciplinary project. The rubric is a separate upload.
